Superfood Hot Chocolate


Chocolate has amazing health properties. It’s high in antioxidants which help keep free radicals from taking over. Studies have found associations between chocolate and heart health, cancer prevention, cognitive function and reducing cholesterol. However – these health benefits come from dark chocolate, typically 75% cocoa or more.

Here is a lovely recipe for hot chocolate without all the sugar. You get a lovely chocolatey flavor from the unsweetened cocoa. Including the maca, turmeric, and cinnamon provides a lovely depth of flavor and adds to the over health benefits of the drink.

This recipe makes 2 cups of hot chocolate – enough for 2 (or a big mug). Consider mixing up all the dry ingredients and just adding milk when you’re ready for a lovely cup of cocoa. Or give the mixed dry ingredients as a gift.

  • 2 cups non-dairy milk your choice
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 tsp maca powder (Optional)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric ground
  • 1 tsp cinnamon ground
  • 1/2 Tbsp honey or 2 tsp sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil


  1. Add milk to a medium-sized sauce pot and bring to a simmer.

  2. Add cacao powder and stir.

  3. Add in maca powder, turmeric, and cinnamon and continue to stir.

  4. Stir in honey (or sugar) until well combined.

  5. Add coconut oil and whip in until all chunks are melted and mixture becomes thick.

  6. Serve immediately.

  7. Alternately, warm up milk in a microwave-safe cup or mason jar. If using a cup, add remaining ingredients and mix with an immersion blender until well combined. If using a mason jar, add remaining ingredients, cap and carefully shake (make sure not to burn yourself - the glass will be hot!).
